My Apps/Programs List

When all my tech started breaking and I had to move from Mac to PC (then another PC, then another…), I started a list of what programs I use to speed setup & recovery. As time went on, I realized the value of finding more FOSS applications that allow a cross-platform (Windows, Mac, AND Linux!) workflow.

Now that I’m having to rebuild everything on a new system (yet again!) I thought I’d update it and share the current state. I hope it is valuable to you too:
  • Email Client = Thunderbird (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Email Host = self-hosted at Greengeeks
  • Calendar Client = Lightening add-on for Thunderbird (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Contacts Client = CardBook add-on for Thunderbird (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Calendar & Contacts Host = The Good Cloud (running Nextcloud)
  • RSS Client = Thunderbird (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • RSS Host = Miniflux (self-hosted at Greengeeks)
  • Websites = Hugo [currently Textpattern] & Wordpress (self-hosted at Greengeeks )
  • Webhost = Greengeeks
  • Registrar = TBD [currently GoDaddy]
  • Filesharing = The Good Cloud (running Nextcloud)
  • Image editor = GIMP (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Music Player = Clementine (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Video Player = VLC for local content, LBRY for online viewing (both Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Video editor = Davinci Resolve (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Video transcoder = Handbrake (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Stereo Audio editor = Audacity (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Multitrack Audio editor = TBD [currently ProTools on Mac]
  • Antivirus = ClamAV (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Drive Burner = Balena Etcher (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Screenshare = TeamViewer (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Text Editor = Atom (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Office Suite = Open Office (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Task/Project Manager = ToDoist (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Time Tracker = Toggl (Window/Mac/web)
  • Podcatcher = Pocketcasts (Windows/Mac/web)
  • VPN = TBD [currently NordVPN]
  • Password Manager = TBD [currently Dashlane]
  • Web Browsers = Firefox for most things, Brave as an alternate, and Chrome for social media & Google products only (Windows/Mac/Linux)
  • Image Clipper = TBD [currently Snagit which is only Windows/Mac]
  • Screencaster = TBD [currently Camtasia which is only Windows/Mac]
