Even though I moved to the middle of Utah in a tiny town of 300 people between a state park and a national forest not really close to anything a few years back, I continued to perform every month or so and to appear online more frequently for most of that time. Usually I’d make the 2.5hr trek to the airport once or twice a month, or go on a day or two’s drive to somewhere.
My last such trip was the end of February. Coming back from Oakland on March 1st and getting sick the next day, I thought I had Coronavirus. Turns out I didn’t (yay!) and it was just a seasonal flu, but I stopped performing anywhere in person. Beatboxing & singing is a superspreading artform after all, so February 29th was the last performance as The One Mouth Band for the foreseeable future.
I did still have a few live streaming appearances for a few months after that. And I was helping produce a few online events & conferences as well. But by July I started my new job and…it seems that I’m not really showing up anywhere anymore. Which is kinda weird.
But then this whole year is kinda weird, isn’t it? I’m grateful to be healthy and pretty well isolated from the crazy of the outside world here in America.
All this is to say, that I don’t have anything on the calendar and I haven’t for months. This hasn’t happened since I was 15 years old. It’s been a good thing to explore in greater depth, decoupling my identity from all that performing stuff.
My question to you is: do you miss me? Like what, if anything, do you wish I was doing? As this year draws to a close, I’m thinking about what makes sense for 2021. I don’t really know what’s worth doing or planning for the coming year.
Perhaps, for the first time since I started this website in 2000, there won’t need to be an “Appearances” section at all…?
