Podcast to YouTube

I recently caught up with a friend who’s got a YouTube Channel that hasn’t seen some love for a while. She’s a consultant and speaker and has been very busy consulting and speaking. Fair enough, but…now she’s got a book deal in the works and needs her YouTube presence to make her look look like she’s the trusted professional that she actually is.

So she’s taking her existing podcast content and putting it up on YouTube now. But of course there’s much more to it than just making MP3s into an MP4s and uploading them.

Her was my advice for gathering all the low-hanging fruit in a single day. I share it in hopes it will help you do the same thing for your audio/video assets.

  1. Go to https://studio.youtube.com/channel/YOURCHANNELIDHERE/videos/ and set all the future episodes that are ready to go to Visibility = Premiere (I usually opt for a 2min intro countdown). This will make the future episodes display on your homepage as clickable things. Spread them out a bit to drip in no more than once a day and no less than once a week. The description will be shared, but don’t worry the video itself won’t go out yet. People can click to be notified and you can encourage them to do exactly that, on a schedule! YouTube likes tasty user behaviors like this. Consistency is key.
  2. Go to https://studio.youtube.com/channel/YOURCHANNELIDHERE/content/playlists and make some playlists
    1. Dropdown button upper-right Create -> new Playlist, and make one for each season of your show that has populated/queued episodes. Give an image, description, sort, etc.
    2. Repeat to make another playlist containing every halfway decent guest interview when you were on somebody else’s podcast talking about decision engineering in some form.
    3. Dropdown button upper-right Create -> new Podcast, and make a new YouTube-based podcast of your whole podcast (and note the RSS settings at the bottom if you want to integrate). Give an image, description, sort, etc.
  3. Go to https://studio.youtube.com/channel/YOURCHANNELIDHERE/editing/profile
    1. Confirm everything there is current and as consistently brand-aligned as possible
    2. add a YouTube Banner https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12950272?hl=en
    3. Go to https://studio.youtube.com/channel/YOURCHANNELIDHERE/editing/hometab and click + Add Section to add the playlists you just made, and any other elements that you think people might like https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/3219384?hl=en

This is not all there is to do, not by a longshot. But it’s the biggest bang for your buck “I can do all this today” top 3 tasks that get you going. If you want more help after that, just let me know!
