I’m looking forward to co-presenting with my manager Rachel Horwitz at my first HR conference next month! It’s the Empower HR Tech Americas 2022 conference organized by HR.com and our session is titled Dare To Care: Practical Practices in Bold Learner Advocacy.
While this was originally going to be a live and in-person session, with the world still being on-and-off weird about gatherings where we all breathe the same air, the entire event is now virtual. Fine by me! You’d have to sign up for the whole conference to see our session, but hey, if you’re into that kinda thing, c’mon in and join the fun! We’re on one month from today (May 11th) at 1:45pm US Eastern Time.
Here’s the description:
Working in L&D and/or HR, it’s easy to get overly-focused on things like training content, policy changes, technology, or business processes — forgetting that all this is for real people with real needs of their own. When we appeal to Learner desires in ways that sound familiar and helpful to them, and when we can craft behaviors they can clearly apply, then the changes we’re trying to support with the assets we’re making can succeed. Without this, we’re in the losing position of pushing people where they don’t want to go. And even if we coerce them somehow, many will rebel or just revert to old behaviors as soon as they get the chance.
Are you willing to care enough to craft a path your Learners can’t help but follow? Can you find the courage to advocate for them with compassion amidst rapid change? Will you join us in building an organizational success that we can all feel good about?
In this dynamic session, you’ll see one example of how to build a learner- centric business function and grow a learning culture within a larger (compliance-driven, rapidly-transforming, and perhaps a bit chaotic?) organization, as well as share solutions that work well where you do. Along the way you’ll explore strategies for developing authentic empathy for the people that you serve, and the people that you report to. With this in hand, you’ll learn how to apply some simple tools to help make, manage, and measure the changes you’re trying to make for the benefit of all.
What You Will Learn:
- How to inspire the behaviors that you really care about
- Personas, Interviews, & Testing to discover what others care about
- Strategic risk taking for Empathy within your organization
Wish us luck!
